Relocation in Michigan
If you're not from Michigan, you might make the
mistake of confusing the entire state for Detroit. And while the Motor City
- with its rich musical heritage, up-and-down cycle of urban blight and almost
obsessive focus on the auto industry - draws a lot of attention, it doesn't
define Michigan. The billion dollar Ford plants and sparkling new stadiums
housing the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers mask the reality that for the
most part, Michigan is a state of small towns and open country.
Even this fact shouldn't imply uniformity though.
The University of Michigan has made Ann Arbor a model university town: 24,000
students returning to campus each fall, blocking traffic on tidy streets lined
with faculty members' Victorian homes. A little to the east, Battle Creek,
Michigan is a company town. Since the eccentric, holistic-health guru Dr.
J. H. Kellogg began preaching the virtues of toasted corn flakes here in the
19th century, Battle Creek has made breakfast cereal for the world.
Now that you're moving to Michigan, there are
a couple facts you'll want to keep in mind.
- Michigan's population is 9,938,444. The state capital is Lansing.
- Next to cars and cereal, tourism is one of Michigan's biggest industries.
Visitors flock to spots like Traverse City and Mackinac for their rustic
atmospheres and Great Lakes vistas.
- Michigan residents are officially called Michiganians. However, in 1848,
Abraham Lincoln coined the phrase "Michiganders" as a joke and
it stuck. Today, both terms are in wide use.
- Michigan is the only state to be divided across two peninsulas. Residents
of Michigan's Upper Peninsula (known as the U.P.) have an accent that's
reminiscent of the area's deep Swedish / German roots are affectionately
known as "Yoopers." Michiganders who live on the mainland are
sometimes called trolls - because they live below the Mackinac Bridge,
which connects the two.
- In Michigan, state law prohibits women from cutting their own hair without
their husband's permission. In Rochester, Michigan local bylaws decree
that the chief of police must inspect all bathing suits before they're
worn.
