Relocation in Nebraska
Nebraska lies on the Great Plains, but the state
is anything but plain. Sure, Nebraska may look painfully average at first
glance: a flat, farm filled expanse as far as the eye can see. But look a
little harder - at the bustling cultural scene around the University of Nebraska's
main campus in Lincoln, or towering Chimney Rock along the Oregon Trail -
and something new about Nebraska starts to take shape. You wouldn't be the
first to write off Nebraska though. Homesteaders working their way towards
California in the 19th century largely passed by the territory, looking for
richer lands farther West. It wasn't until a few insightful pioneers took
a closer look at Nebraska that people started to realize it was an agricultural
paradise. What else aren't you noticing about Nebraska?
It would be hard to overlook Nebraska's capitol
building: a concrete, art-deco skyscraper topped by a golden sculpture of
a farmer that the American Institute of Architects has called one of the modern
wonders of the world. And it would be a shame to miss the world's largest
indoor rainforest, the Lied Jungle, in Omaha. But most of all, sell Nebraska
short and you'll miss out on Nebraskans; some of the most genuine folks you'll
ever meet.
Now that you're moving to Nebraska, there are
a couple facts you'll want to keep in mind:
- Nebraska has a population of 1,711,263. The state capital is Lincoln.
- Nebraska is the only state in the U.S. to have a unicameral legislature;
that is, a single state legislative body as opposed to an assembly and
a senate.
- Not a people for great cuisine, Kool Aid was invented by a Nebraskan
and most of America's spam is made in Fremont.
- The world's largest porch swing is located in Hebron, Nebraska. It can
seat 25 adults.
- Arbor Day was begun in Nebraska by J. Sterling Morton in 1872.
- In Nebraska it's illegal for a mother to give her daughter a perm without
a state license, and despite the fact Nebraska isn't near any oceans,
whale fishing is still outlawed.
