Relocation in South Dakota
Your preconceived notions about South Dakota
are wrong. We'll start with the simplest. Think South Dakota is flat? South
Dakota's Harney Peak is the tallest mountain in America, east of the Rockies.
Think South Dakota is and always has been a sleepy farming state? In the late
1900s, the Dakota Territory (part of which is now South Dakota) was one of
the wildest parts of the Wild West. Prospectors, gamblers and bandits swarmed
South Dakota, especially the town of Deadwood. Western icon Wild Bill Hickok
was killed during a card game in South Dakota, and Wyatt Earp enforced the
law here. Think South Dakota knows more about sorghum than silicon? Plans
are afoot to convert America's deepest mine - the Homestake Gold Mine near
Lead, South Dakota - into a massive, advanced underground research lab.
Still think that South Dakota is too, well, South
Dakota-like for your tastes? Perhaps you can't be convinced. Sioux Falls,
South Dakota's biggest city, isn't much compared to Chicago. But you won't
be able to drive past grazing buffalo along the Miracle Mile. And even on
South Dakota's worst smog day, the air is still cleaner and clearer than almost
anywhere else in the country.
Now that you're moving to South Dakota, there
are a couple things you'll want to keep in mind:
- South Dakota's population is 754,844. South Dakota's capital is Pierre.
- The world's largest indoor, naturally heated swimming pool is in South
Dakota. In the town of Hot Springs the Evans Plunge pool is heated by
naturally warmed mineral water.
- South Dakota's most recognizable spot is Mount Rushmore, the presidential
group portrait in stone. Begun in 1927 by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, the
entire project cost $1 million and took 14 years to complete.
- Every year Sturgis, South Dakota hosts the Black Hills Classic Motorcycle
Rally. The event has become one of the largest annual gatherings of Harley-Davidson
enthusiasts in the world.
- In South Dakota, it's illegal to lie down and fall asleep inside a cheese
factory.
