Home to Pez Candy, the World Wrestling Federation and leader of the nation in per capita wealth during the mid 1990s, the Constitution State offers a wide variety of experiences to its residents. Historic, contemporary, dramatic, natural, quaint, bustling, seaside, mountainous and valley-like all describe different parts of this state.

Situated in the northeastern region of the United States, Connecticut occupies the southernmost portion of New England. Bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north and New York to the West, the state measures 5,009 square miles, extending for 90 miles in an east-west direction and 75 miles from north to south. Roughly rectangular in shape, with a panhandle probing the New York border, Connecticut is the third smallest state in the United States, but one of the most densely populated. The population in 2013 was more than 3.5 million. One reason for the high population might be because of the big corporations headquartered here.

Large employers include General Electric, United Technologies, Aetna, Xerox, Cigna and Hartford Financial Services Group. The insurance industry employs many people, as does agriculture and tourism. Travelers have an array of vacation spots to visit.

One of the most popular, Mystic Country, makes a great family getaway. See the tall ships of Mystic Seaport, beluga whales at the Mystic Aquarium, shop unique boutiques in downtown and visit the mansion where Bogie and Bacall honeymooned.

Connecticut’s system of rivers, waterways and forests make an ideal setting for outdoor recreation. Lots of opportunities exist for camping, fishing, hiking, boating, picnicking, bird watching and nature walks. The pleasant weather encourages outdoor activities.

The generally temperate climate hosts mild winters and warm summers, although the coastal areas favor warmer winters and cooler summers than the interior. Rainfall tends to be distributed evenly throughout the state and throughout the year. Average precipitation ranges from 48 to 52 inches a year.

When you’re in Hartford, the capital, remember, under no circumstances can you cross the street walking on your hands. It’s the law.
